        Offshore Drilling

        Picture
The North Aleutian Basin of Bristol Bay and the Southeast Bering Sea are considered to be under the Outer Continental Shelf 5-year leasing program for offshore development. The Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) includes submerged land, subsoil, and seabed, that begins 3-9 nautical miles from the shore and extends as far 200 nautical miles depending on the state. Bristol Bay has been threatened by offshore drilling for forty years with short-lived forms of protection. For 13 years Bristol Bay was protected by a congressional moratorium because of its precious fisheries, cultural significance, and ecological sensitivity. Thanks to the Obama Administration, Bristol Bay is protected again. However, the protection is only temporary that would reopen Bristol Bay for offshore oil and gas leasing by 2017. It is vital to establish a permanent protection solution from offshore mineral and hydrocarbon extraction in Bristol Bay for the longevity of our fisheries and culture. The combined fisheries of the Bering Sea and Bristol Bay are too economically important to local communities and the nation, which provides roughly half of the wild-caught seafood in America. To help permanently protect Bristol Bay from offshore mineral extraction; send resolutions from your tribe, community, and organization to Nunamta Aulukestai.
